529212 Matthew B. Ridgway Click on image for larger size
Matthew Bunker Ridgway, 1895-1993. United States Army general; commander of United Nations forces in Korea; NATO Supreme Commander. Vintage bust photograph of Ridgway in uniform, inscribed To Miss Rosemary E. Wright / with sincere best wishes / M. B. Ridgway and dated 30 Dec. 53. This pose is vintage Ridgway—his set jaw and the hand grenade strapped to his vest show his determination and grit. Ridgway signed this photograph while he was the Army Chief of Staff, a position to which his predecessor, by then President Dwight D. Eisenhower, appointed him in October 1953. Since the United Nations flag is behind him, the photograph itself was probably taken while Ridgway commanded the United Nations forces in Korea. This photograph has outstanding provenance. It comes from a collection originally assembled by Rosemary E. Wright (1890-1969), who spent some 35 years working for the Army, ultimately as Chief of the Army General Staff Assignment Section, before she retired in November 1953. Ridgway has inscribed and signed this photograph in black fountain pen. There is a small stain at the lower right edge of the image, but it does not affect either the inscription or the signature. Overall the piece is in fine to very fine condition. Unframed. _____________
